Gayvid

Sculpture

~Exhibited in ‘Discarded Fruit Holder’ a collaborative show with Joaquin Golez coordinated by Steve Brown (Helen’s Costume)

October—November 2023

"GAYVID" is a bronze sculpture of myself that pays homage to Michelangelo's iconic "David," exploring themes of identity and representation within the context of gender diversity. Standing 14 feet tall, my work recontextualizes the original masterpiece to probe the construction of identity through the lens of queer experiences.

Utilizing a 3D scanner for precision, I positioned myself in a pose reminiscent of Michelangelo's David, aiming to connect more deeply with the classical hero. While closely mimicking the anatomical mastery of the original, the final piece is noted for its resemblance to Donatello's "David," a nod to the artist’s exploration of queer identity.

Through "GAYVID," I invite viewers to reconsider the narratives surrounding these classical figures, examining how artistic revivals can challenge stereotypes and celebrate diversity in form and identity.
